Forget about underpowered electric vehicles. The all-new electric GMC Sierra Denali is on its way, and it’s bound to prove that EVs can deliver groundbreaking power, impressive capabilities, and rugged good looks.
Capabilities & Technology
“Sierra Denali holds tremendous equity for GMC and our customers,” explained vice president of GMC Duncan Aldred. “We now have an opportunity to evolve Sierra’s capabilities and technologies, as afforded by transitioning to an all-electric propulsion while also elevating the luxurious design and comfort associated with Denali.”
GMC Electric Vehicles
The electric Sierra Denali is slated to be the third GMC electric vehicle. It will follow other rugged, capable models, such as the GMC Hummer EV SUV and Pickup models. Like the two upcoming Hummers, the Sierra Denali will be based on the Ultium Platform. And on top of that strong base, it’ll boast a wealth of premium features and top-quality craftsmanship.
Currently, GMC hasn’t set a release date for this revolutionary pickup truck. However, we do know that the electric GMC Sierra Denali will be built right here in the United States. These innovative trucks will roll off the line at the GM Factory ZERO Assembly Plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan.

“Sierra’s momentum continues to accelerate, as the fastest growing model in the segment,” said Duncan Aldred, global vice president of GMC and Buick. “With the 2022 Sierra, GMC is offering customers more advanced technologies, upscale appointments, and increased capability across the Sierra lineup, including the all-new Sierra Denali Ultimate and AT4X.”
The available Duramax® turbodiesel engine generates 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. A properly equipped 2022 Sierra 1500 (Duramax® engine and rear-wheel drive) will be able to tow a maximum weight of 13,200 pounds. Compared to the 2021 Sierra 1500, the 2022 model can tow 4,000 more pounds. How did GMC do it? They made changes to the Sierra 1500’s chassis. The changes meant the truck could handle the automaker’s maximum towing package, which thus enabled the increased towing capacity.
Rear-wheel drive-equipped 2022 Sierra 1500’s aren’t the only models that boast an impressive towing capacity increase. 2022 Sierra 1500 models with four-wheel drive can tow a maximum weight of 13,000 pounds. This rating is 4,000-more pounds than the 2021 Sierra 1500’s maximum towing capacity of 9,000 pounds.

The innovative new CarbonPro bed on the GMC Sierra is the first use of this unique carbon fiber composite in pickup trucks, and it delivers unmatched strength and durability. Boasting “best-in-class dent, scratch, and corrosion resistance,” according to GMC, the CarbonPro bed is more lightweight, spacious, and versatile than ever.
The carbon fiber used to make the CarbonPro bed, the same raw material often found in supercars and spacecraft, is super lightweight, shaving 60 pounds off the total weight of the Sierra. It’s bigger, too, with an extra cubic foot of cargo space in the bed, and its durable, textured surface means it doesn’t even need a bedliner.
The CabonPro bed was rigorously tested to ensure its resistance to every kind of damage. GMC tested its performance in extreme temperatures both high and low, dropped heavy loads into the bed repeatedly, and even ran a snowmobile in the bed at full power, with the bed sustaining little to no damage.
A limited number of CarbonPro-equipped vehicles will be released for the 2019 model year, so find a GMC Sierra Carbon Pro on sale soon. If you miss it, though, don’t worry — GMC plans to offer the CarbonPro much more widely in 2020.
